so we treked down to hilton head, south carolina yesterday for our annual week-long vacation with jeff's family. today was our first day on the beach; both jeff and i noticed how much easier it is with the kids this year. it's the first year they've been old enough to a) entertain themselves and b) not have to go inside in the middle of the day to take a nap. it's like all of a sudden the skies parted and the sun shone and we realized that we are PAST the days of having babies and toddlers on the beach. we don't have to schlep baby gates and bouncy seats and bottles and pacifiers. we pack a few sandwiches, some bottles of water and some sand toys and off we go. it's the first vacation in almost 6 years that we feel like the two of us actually get to relax. it's heaven :)
here are just a few snaps i took with my point and shoot.
disclaimer #1: i didn't want to lug my big camera with me...it felt too much like work (which kind of makes me sad. i used to LOVE taking photos of the kids at the beach and i always swore i'd stop doing photography professionally when it became a chore instead of something i enjoyed doing. no worries - i'm not quitting. but i do wish i'd had the energy and desire to bring my big camera).
disclaimer #2: these probably look a little wonky because i only have my (uncalibrated) laptop with me and none of my actions and shortcuts. so i just fiddled a bit with the levels and curves in photoshop, sharpened them for the web and slapped them up. forgive the amateur look:

i don't think you can tell, but kate is glowering at me in this photo. i had just told her we had to clean up and head back to the room. i expect to see more of this face in the coming years:
